The opening of the Kanchanjanga area for trekking in
1988 makes it possible to visit wonderful and relatively
unexplored tracts of foothill and alpine country in
eastern Nepal, now reached easily by daily flights to
Biratnagar or Tumlingtar. For those with less time or
those preferring not to penetrate as far as the Makalu
and Kanchanjanga Base Camps, the Milke Danda Ridge is
an excellent alternative. Trekking routes pass through
fine forests, high open grazing areas and colorful Rai
and Limbu villages. This shorter trek will pass through
rhododendron forests in bloom with outstanding mountain
views. The return route passes through Chainpur, famous
for its brassware. into the Arun valley and ends in
the charming village of Hille. For those who seek a
longer and more arduous trek, both the Makalu base camp
and Kanchanjanga base camp routes offer almost endless
opportunities for exploration. With a myriad of glaciers
and High Mountain crossing one can encounter vast areas
of untrekked terrain-quite a challenge high in the shadow
of Kanchanjanga.

Makalu
Base Camp Adventure Trek

You can make an outstanding trek in eastern Nepal from
Tumlingtar by walking north up the Arun River to Sedua
and Num, then crossing Shipton La (4127 meters) into
the upper Barun Khola Valley for a close look at Makalu
(8475 meters) and Chamlang (7290 meters). The trek to
Makalu base camp visits one of the most remote and unfrequented
areas of Nepal. The Barun Valley is part of a huge international
protected area under an agreement between Nepal and
China.
