About Lhotse Expedition:

Lhotse Expedition lies about 3 kilometres south of Mount Everest, separated by the South Col. In fact, Lhotse means South Face. Three peaks that make up the Lhotse massif are Lhotse East or Middle, Lhotse Shar and Lhotse. Immediately south of Mount Everest lies the long east-west crest, and the summits of the two mountains are connected by the South Col. South Face of Lhotse is the most technical face of Lhotse. The Lhotse South Face is also one of the largest mountain faces in the world. The section during the climb, which has been unanimously declared the most dangerous, is the Khumbu Icefall. Both Mt Everest and Lhotse share the same base camp. In fact, Lhotse is a part of the Everest massif itself.

However, Kathmandu Summit Adventure’s Lhotse Expedition is considered to be an independent mountain. After several unsuccessful attempts, the South Face was successful and climbed only in 1984. This beautiful massif also holds immense promise as it is little developed and offers fascinating opportunities. Lhotse can be climbed either from Everest Base Camp or nearby Chhukung. Being an 8000m, the Lhotse Expedition encounters many obstacles, including high altitudes, harsh weather conditions and even sheer exhaustion. We believe our planning, logistics, staffing and experience coupled with your enthusiasm, patience, and perseverance would help you achieve your lifetime dream. We strive hard to conduct the best expedition program at a fair price.

Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel -1300m/4264ft:

Upon your arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, a representative from Kathmandu Summit Adventure will greet you and take you to your hotel. After checking in, you can rest or visit the Kathmandu Summit Adventure office. You may also want to explore the streets of Thamel, a popular tourist hub in Kathmandu, where you can shop for souvenirs. In the evening, a welcome dinner will be hosted by Kathmandu Summit Adventure, featuring delicious Nepalese cuisine that will give you a taste of the country’s authentic food culture. Overnight stay in Kathmandu. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Day 02 – 03: Kathmandu: Sightseeing and Trek Preparation:

Sightseeing and Preparation for Everest Expedition. While the leader attends a formal briefing in the Ministry of Tourism, you will explore the fascinating city of Kathmandu. You will visit the famous Stupa, Boudhnath and the popular Hindu pilgrimage site, Pashupatinath Temple. The leader will check everyone’s equipment in the late afternoon, as Kathmandu is the last opportunity to buy anything missing. You will also get introduced to fellow expedition members and guides. Overnight at hotel.

Day 04: Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla – 2,840m/9,315ft:

An early morning scenic flight to Lukla. We will meet our camp staff and porters in Lukla and set off straightaway for our first night’s stop at Phakding. Situated on the banks of the Dudh Kosi which drains the whole of the Khumbu region, Phakding is on the main trade route through the area and there are a number of clean well-built lodges where we can spend the night.

Day 05: Lukla to Namche Bazar Trek:

Continue up the banks of the Dudh Kosi, crossing it twice by small suspension bridges before reaching the village of Monjo where we will enter the Khumbu National Park. Cross the confluence of the Dudh Kosi and the Bhote Kosi on a high suspension bridge and climb steeply for about two hours to reach Namche Bazaar. This is a prosperous trading town and the capital of the Khumbu region with genuine Tibetan artefacts.

Day 06: Leisure and Acclimatization in Namche Bazar:

We spend a day in Namche Bazar resting and allowing our bodies to become acclimatized to the altitude of 3,450m (11,300ft).

Day 07: Namche Bazar to Thyangboche Trek:

The well-worn Everest trail contours around the side of the valley high above the Dudh Kosi. Follow the path, savouring the first really good views of the great peaks of the Khumbu: Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam. Passing by several villages and numerous tea shops, cross the Dudh Kosi River and make a steep climb to Thyangboche, home of an impressive and newly rebuilt monastery.

Day 08: Thyagboche to Dingboche Trek:

Shaded by rhododendron trees, the path leads gradually down to the river once again to another airy suspension bridge. An hour’s walking from here brings us to Pangboche, an excellent viewpoint for Ama Dablam. Contouring up the valley side, re-cross the river and turn up the Imja valley to reach the picturesque farming village of Dingboche.

Day 09 – 13: Acclimatization :

This is an important phase of the expedition. Dingboche is a good location for acclimatization. The team leader will organize daily outings to the adjacent hills with the aim of providing gradual acclimatization. Walk some of the nearby hills in order to slowly increase exposure to altitude. Follow the regime that you have previously found most suitable, in order to give you maximum acclimatization before arriving in base camp. While in Dingboche, we can attend a seminar on high-altitude acclimatization at a hospital run by the Himalayan Rescue Association near Pheriche. The walk over to Pheriche and back will also serve as good acclimatization training.

Day 14 – 40: Climbing period of Lhotse and Back to Base Camp Trek:

Today, we begin our climbing preparation. We hike toward Camp I. Get back to Base camp again.

Day 41: Everest Base Camp to Dingboche Trek:

Today after breakfast at the base camp, we will return to Dingboche via Lobuche on the same trail that we walked earlier on the expedition. On arrival at Dingboche, we will retire early tonight to make sure that we get ample sleep before beginning to trek the next day. Overnight stay in Dingboche.

Day 42: Dingboche to Tengboche Trek:

We begin trekking back from Dingboche to Tengboche on the same route first by descending to Lobuche River and walking past the Imja Valley. From here we reach Pangboche through the upper trail and a bit of uphill walk will take us to Deboche. Crossing the Imja River and walking past birch, conifer and rhododendron forest, we will reach Tengboche to stop for the night. Overnight stay in Tengboche.

Day 43: Tengboche to Namche Bazaar Trek:

After breakfast in the morning, we will start hiking back to Namche Bazaar. It is mostly a downhill walk until we reach Phunki. From here the trail is rather very easy and in a short while, we will arrive in Namche Bazaar and check-in at our hotel room and relax the remaining time. Overnight stay in Namche Bazaar.

Day 44: Namche Bazaar to Lukla Trek:

The trail descends steeply downward, so we need to walk very cautiously as our shaky legs continuously battle the rocky terrain. After crossing several suspension bridges over the fast-flowing Dudh Koshi River and its tributaries, the trail becomes more leveled and natural. After our arrival in Lukla, we stretch those sore legs and recall the experience of the last couple of weeks in the Himalayas. Overnight stay in Lukla.

Day 45: Fly from Lukla to Kathmandu:

We catch an early morning flight to Kathmandu after our long mountain journey. After reaching Kathmandu, we can take rest or do some souvenir shopping. If we want to explore any other areas of Kathmandu, we may do that today. Our guides will help you with both souvenir shopping or sightseeing. There will be a farewell dinner in the evening to celebrate the successful completion of our journey. Overnight stay in Kathmandu.

Day 46 – 47: Rest day in Kathmandu :

Today the journey comes to an end. There’s nothing to do but trade emails with your new friends, organize all your photos and final preparation for departure from Nepal.

Day 48: Final Departure:

Your adventure in Nepal comes to an end today! There is nothing to do but trade emails with your travel companions and organize your photos. We will be dropped at the Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA) by a representative from Kathmandu Summit Adventure, approximately 3 hours before your scheduled flight back home. However, there is always an opportunity to extend our holidays in Nepal by embarking on other exciting activities, if we decide to return home later on!

Note: The above-mentioned program itinerary is a sample. The period and cost of tour, trekking, volunteering or internship can be changed or extended as per travellers or volunteers' availability of duration.
